AI coding editors & agents

What each tool actually does, who it is for, and where the source code lives.

AI coding tools are no longer just autocomplete. A modern editor can plan a change across a repository, run tests, read compiler errors, and open a pull request — but they differ a lot in how much control they give you, where your code runs, and what they cost.

This page groups the tools by how you use them: terminal and CLI agents, AI-native editors, IDE extensions, autonomous cloud agents, and app builders. Each entry lists the licence, a rough price floor, the official site, and the GitHub repository when the project is open source.

Use the notes to separate tools that run locally with your own API keys from hosted products that keep your code on their servers. If you only need a recommendation: start with an extension inside the editor you already use, move to a CLI agent when you want scriptable automation, and pick a cloud agent only for well-scoped, verifiable tasks.

Terminal & CLI agents

Run in your shell, edit files directly, and fit into scripts and CI.

10 tools

OpenCode

How to choose without wasting a week

Match the tool to the level of autonomy you actually want. Completion-only tools are cheap and safe; IDE agents are a good default for everyday work; terminal agents are the best fit for scripted, repeatable tasks; cloud agents make sense when a task has tests and a clear definition of done.

Then check the boring details: where the code is processed, whether the licence allows your use case, what happens when the vendor changes pricing, and whether you can leave with your data. Open-source clients with bring-your-own-key model access are the easiest to audit and to replace.
